Cheap flights from the UK to South of France

In France, the international flight arrivals are heavily concentrated on Paris. Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) is by far the largest airport in France, with over 230 flight destinations around the World and over 100 different airlines operate at the airport. Charles de Gaullle is used by over 200,000 passengers per day and it is the second busiest airport in Europe (after London Heathrow). It is estimated that in 2026, Paris CDG will handle 72.3 million passengers. When you also factor in Paris Orly airport (ORY), which tends to focus on destinations in North Africa and medium-haul Europe routes; the 2 Paris airports handle over 50% of the flights in an out of France. Together, Charles de Gaulle and Orly handle over 100 million passengers per year. The next 10 busiest airports in France, collectively handle 77 million passengers. [SOURCE: World Data - Airports]
So this shows you how much the the airport industry in France is concentrated on Paris. It is perhaps not surprising considering Paris welcomes over 48 million tourist visits per year and is home to 9 out of the top 10 most popular tourist attractions in France. The next most popular region in France is the French Riviera, with 10 million tourists per year.
Over the last 20-30 years, the emergence of a number of low cost carriers such as TUI, Transavia, Volotea, Vueling and especially Ryanair, and Easyjet, has really opened up regional France, with a vast array of medium-haul routes. Cheap flights to South France airports |
Although most of these airports in South France were originally developed by Air France, it is undoubtedly the presence of low cost carriers such as TUI, Ryanair and Easyjet, who have really opened up the international flights to the South of France.
When we first started traveling to the South of France, 25-30 years ago, you were lucky if you could get a flight to Nice or Marseille direct from one of the larger airports in the UK. Or alternatively, you had to route via Paris.
Even when we started our website business in France over 19 years ago, I would say that still around 50% of our customers took the long drive down from Ireland and the UK. Now it is less than 10%. Nowadays, you can fly direct to the South of France from over 240 destinations. It is now no longer a question of whether you are flying to Nice for a holiday on the French Riviera or Marseille airport to reach your holiday home in Provence. There are now 10 international airports that operate cheap flights to Southern France. This has resulted in a major boom in the tourism industry, especially in the Languedoc region. This has resulted in a major boom in the tourism industry in the South of France, especially in the Languedoc region. The growth of these international airports, especially in Montpellier, Beziers and Carcassonne has opened up a whole new area to explore in Southern France.
In 2025, France welcomes over 100 million tourist visitors, making it the most visited country in the World. It is estimated that tourism in France accounts for €100 billion euros of income (around 4% of French GDP) and leads directly or indirectly to 2 million jobs in the tourism and hotel & catering sector.
Low cost airports in South of France
A lot of the low cost airports in Southern France were formerly naval or air force bases, but they have now been developed to provide regular civil flights, to serve the tourism industry in Southern France. Most of these newer airports have taken great strides in recent years to develop improved passenger facilities, with Perpignan airport and Carcassonne airport in particular, undertaking major refurbishments. These airports no longer look like high school gymnasiums (although Rodez airport and Beziers airport still do to a certain extent).
I have arranged these airports serving the South of France in geographical order, starting in the French Riviera with Nice airport and moving round through Provence (with Toulon and Marseille airports), then down to the Languedoc (with Nimes, Montpellier, Beziers, Carcassonne and Perpignan airport); and then finally to the Toulouse and Rodez airport serving the rest of the Occitanie region of central Southern France. I have also added short cut links to our long term rental properties in Southern France, that are within 1 hour drive of each airport.
1. Nice international airport France
Nice airport is the gateway to the stunning French Riviera and it is the largest international airport in South France. It currently serves 15 million passengers per year and handles more than 200 daily flights. Currently, 61 different airlines operate out of Nice airport, serving over 120 destinations. As well as operating nearly 100 flights per week to Paris Orly & Charles de Gaulle, some of the more popular routes to and from Nice airport include, Madrid (3-4 flights per day), Amsterdam (2-4 flights per day on average), Geneva (2-5 flights per day), Frankfurt (3 flights per day), Zurich (3 flights per day), Rome (3 flights per day) and London Heathrow (an average of 5 flights per day)

Nice airport
Menton, French Riviera
The stunning coastline of the French Riviera has been attracting holidaymakers for over 200 years. Nice airport provides quick access to the local motorway and public transport network, so it is easy to reach popular destinations such as St Tropez, Cannes, Antibes, Mougins, Grasse, Eze, St-Paul-de-Vence, Villefranche-sur-Mer, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Monaco and Menton. There are also many things to do and see in Nice itself, with more museums and art galleries than any other city in France outside of Paris. The annual Carnival, held in Nice every February/March, is the largest festival in France and one of the largest Carnivals in the World after Rio. The Nice Jazz festival, is one of the oldest Jazz festivals in the World, starting in 1948. The festival is held in July each year.

2. Toulon airport South France
Toulon is a former military airport located just outside the seaside town of Hyeres. The airport is still shared with the French Navy. Toulon is predominantly a domestic airport, with regular flights to Paris, Lille, Brittany and Nantes, but some smaller carriers do provide services to Rotterdam and London City airports.
- Ryanair has a regular flight to Toulon airport in the summer months from London Stansted.
- British Airways has 2 flights per week (Tuesday and Saturdays) from London City airport to Toulon airport
- Transavia runs 2 flights a week from Rotterdam airport in Holland to Toulon from April to September (Tuesdays and Saturdays).
Holiday rentals in Provence France
Toulon airport is the closest airport to Saint Tropez and it also provides access to the beautiful Var department, covering the eastern part of Provence. The airport is therefore a good option for reaching such popular Provençal towns as Cotignac, Barjols, Salernes, Fayence, Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume, Brignoles and Callian.
This collection of holiday cottages and gites in Provence can be accessed by both Toulon and Marseille airports (see below).
3. Marseille-Provence international airport France 2026 flights

Marseille airport is the 4th largest airport in France, serving its second city. The airport handles over 11 million passengers each year and 100 flights per day. 38 airlines operate flights from Marseille to 125 different destinations. There are a lot of flights from Marseille to North Africa (Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria). The airport has 2 terminals. We often fly from Marseille airport to the UK and we used to fly to Tenerife to see my parents. To be honest, Terminal 1 is now a bit tired and crowded and overdue a refurbishment. But one of the benefits of Marseille airport is that there is a mainline train station just a short bus ride from the airport and there are plenty of cheap hotels close to the terminal buildings.
There are over 50 flights per week to Paris Charles de Gaulle airport and regular flights to regional airports within France. There are 3 long-haul flights per week from Marseille to Shanghai in China and 4 flights per week to the Reunion Islands. There is also a daily flight throughout the year to Montreal (YUL) and a weekly flight to Quebec Jean Lesage airport with Air Transat.
Ryanair is now the largest airline operating out of Marseille airport, with over 250 flights per week. The airline operates 2 flights per day to London Stansted.
- Ryanair also operates 4 flights per week to Manchester airport during April to October (Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays) and 5 flights per week to Edinburgh airport from June to August (and 3-4 flights per week during April, May, September and October). Bristol airport has 2 flights per week to Marseille from June to August (Mondays and Saturdays). During the summer period, there are 3 flights per week to Stockholm, Sweden (Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays) and
- Easyjet has 2 flights per week to Bristol airport, UK (Tuesdays and Saturdays), with a 3rd flight (on Thursdays) during July and August. It operates a daily flight from London Gatwick throughout the year.
- SAS flies to Copenhagen 2 times per week from Marseille airport during the summer months (Mondays and Fridays)
Marseille airport in South France is quite handy for reaching long term rental properties in western Provence - especially around Aix-en-Provence, the beautiful Luberon region and around the pretty villages of Gordes, Roussillon and L'Isle-sur-Sorgue.
4. Cheap flights to Nimes South France international airport
This former naval airbase has been developed into Nîmes Airport in recent years. Nimes airport has a number of different names (all designed by a committee no doubt). So its official name is Nîmes–Alès–Camargue–Cévennes Airport, it is also known locally as Garons Airport (after the local village where it is based) and on the road signage it is referred to as Nîmes Garons Airport. I prefer just Nimes airport!!
The airport is located 9 km south-southeast of the city of Nîmes. The airport serves the western side of the Provence region, including such popular towns as Avignon, Uzes, St-Remy-de-Provence, Gordes, Roussillon and Châteauneuf-des-Pâpes. The airport is also the gateway to the Camargue, one of the largest wetlands in Europe. The town of Arles, just 20km east of Nimes airport was once the stomping ground of Vincent van Gogh (and where he famously cut off his ear).
Nimes airport is primarily a Ryanair airport, with no other airline currently operating out of the airport. During 2025, Nimes airport handled just over 250,000 passenger journeys. During the 20th Century, the city of Nimes experienced large numbers of immigrants from Portugal and North Africa especially. In many ways, this can be seen in the scheduled flights to both Portugal and Morocco throughout the year.

The airport employs 110 people directly and it is estimated to provide over 600 jobs indirectly in the local area. Béziers airport is estimated to generate more than €65 million euros of revenue to the local economy.
Beziers airport also has some good local transport connections to Beziers SNCF train station (with TGV services to Perpignan, Carcassonne, Toulouse, Montpellier, Nimes, Agde and Avignon), Beziers bus station, Marseillan, Agde and Vias. Beziers ideal location for a vacation in South France

In terms of a location for a summer vacation in South France, Beziers has everything going for it. It is just 10km from the Mediterranean coast. It has a great transport network. It has over 2,000 years of history and it is quickly regenerating itself for the 21st Century.
This historic South France city grew famous as the capital of the wine region in Southern France. A settlement has stood here on the banks of the River Orb, since before Roman times. There are remains from Greek settlers (who first arrived in the 6th century BC) and new archaeological remains have been unearthed to show that a settlers may have been living on the site of Beziers well-before the Greeks. This would make Béziers the oldest town in France, even before Marseille.
The countryside around Beziers is glorious. The city is surrounded by vineyards in all directions. If you are looking for peace and tranquillity then the Haut Languedoc Regional Park, about 45mins from Beziers, is a good choice.

7. Cheap flights to Perpignan France international airport Southern France
Perpignan airport is the Southern most international airport in mainland France. Perpignan airport really started developing once Ryanair began operating flights to Perpignan from Ireland and the UK. But in the last few years Ryanair has cut back on its schedule of flights to Perpignan and it now only operates seasonal flights from Dublin and Birmingham and some schedule routes to London Stansted and Charleroi airport in Belgium. This is a real shame because the Ryanair flights really helped open up the region and some of the local towns and the ski resorts at Font Romeu and Les Angles really benefitted from that. There was a rumour circulating that the President of Perpignan airport had a spectacular falling out with the CEO of Ryanair over landing fees, but I don't know if there is any truth in that.
Perpignan airport has recently undergone a much-needed refurbishment and in 2025 it handled over 470,000 passenger journeys. Although Perpignan airport has some regular flights to Paris and other cities in France (Nantes and Lille), Perpignan airport is mainly a seasonal airport, with a summer schedule of flights from Birmingham, Leeds-Bradford and Stansted airports with Ryanair. During the summer months (May to mid-September), Aer Lingus runs 4 flights per week from Dublin airport to Perpignan airport. The flight prices are currently quite reasonable, at around €200 each way.
This is the full list of destinations with cheap flights to Perpignan airport:

8. Cheap flights to Carcassonne France international airport

Carcassonne airport has recently undergone a major facelift, with a brand new frontage to the airport entrance and upgrades to the passenger facilities. The renovations cost €11 million euros and took 3 years to complete. It is still a very small airport, with just four departure lounges (previously there were just 2 lounges) and a team of staff who still seem to get taken by surprise when a plane lands.
During 2025, Carcassonne airport handled 340,000 passengers, which was an increase of 20% on 2024. The passenger numbers are expected to increase further during 2026. Carcassonne airport actually runs flights to 5 different countries, including UK, Ireland, Belgium, Portugal and Morocco. The main operator remains Ryanair, although there are rumours that additional routes from different airlines may begin to appear in 2026.
I have no idea who runs Carcassonne airport, but they are not exactly going to make a great career in Airport Marketing. The amount of times we have been asked by customers "Which is the nearest airport to Carcassonne?". Maybe the CIA should employ these people to ensure that the location of Interrogation Black sites is also kept a secret.

9. Cheap flights South France to Rodez airport
I don't know why, but I always seem to forget Rodez airport when I think of airports in the South of France. But it actually serves a useful catchment area for long term rentals in south-central France. Rodez airport specialises in providing cheap flights to the Aveyron, the Lot and the Tarn regions of central Southern France. Within 1 hour of the airport, you can reach towns such as the beautiful cathedral city of Albi (the birthplace of the painter Henri Toulouse-Lautrec), the charming medieval town of Figeac, the hilltop village of Cordes-sur-Ciel, the popular wine-making town of Gaillac and the fortified village of Najac.
Rodez airport airport is located about 10km outside of Rodez, a surprisingly large town of nearly 50,000 people. Even with the new passenger terminal, the facilities are a little sparse. But then the benefit is that you can park right next to the departure hall and you can get on and off your flight pretty quickly. During 2025, Rodez airport handled over 190,000 passenger journeys.
