I live locally to Beziers, so I would probably recommend the following villages and towns to consider for your stay:

• Pezenas - beautiful medieval town, with plenty of shops, restaurants, a great Saturday market and wonderful food & wine festival every Friday night. 20 mins to the coast and surrounded by vineyards.
• Portiragnes is located just 3kms from Beziers airport. There are actually two Portiragnes - the old village located beside the Canal du Midi and the holiday resort of Portiragnes Plage situated 3kms away on the Mediterranean coast
• Marseillan - lovely harbour town just 3kms from the beaches. There is a bus service direct from Beziers airport to Marseillan and local buses can take you to the beach. You certainly wouldn't need a car if you stayed in Marseillan - there are plenty of good restaurants, shops, bars and local activities.
• Margon - medieval village with a beautiful 13th Century Chateau in the centre of the village. Popular local bar and restaurant and a daily fresh bread delivery service.
• Vias - is located 5kms from Beziers airport. Like Portiragnes the town is split in 2 halves. There is the old medieval village of Vias and the modern resort of Vias Plage which is 2kms away on the coast and is home to numerous campsites and Amusement parks.
• Nezignan l'Eveque - stunning village just 15kms from the beach and 2km from Pezenas. There is a great bar/restaurant, shop, boulangerie, a popular hotel with fine dining restaurant, an award-winning Pizza restaurant and 2 wine cellars where you can buy wine direct from the producer.
• Neffies - a lovely wine-making village with my favourite restaurant (Le Very'Table). Neffies also has a shop and a popular bar which also serves food. Neffies is in the foothills of the Caroux hills, with great cycling routes and walking trails. Pezenas is 10 mins and the beaches 30 mins.
• Serignan - a popular village just 3km from the coast. Very handy for Beziers airport (10 mins)
• Caux - another pretty wine-making village close to Pezenas and 25 mins to the beach

Beziers is definitely a town on the up. The centre of the city has undergone a major refurbishment, with the facades of all the old Mansion buildings lovingly restored and the central esplanade has been completely remodelled with water features.
